Thinking about Worship: A Sample from the Free Church Approved List — Jesus be the Centre

I was glad to discover Jesus Be the Centre on the Free Church of Scotland Approved Hymns list.
It’s a Vineyard number, released at a time, in my opinion, when Vineyard were releasing some great worship songs.
This song is simple but powerful. When sung worshipfully, with acoustic accompaniment, it can help lead God’s people into a place of intimacy, adoration and fresh surrender and consecration. To get the best out of the song, it should be played more than once. Not to generate mindless repetition, but to help us “get it”. Sometimes we can sing a song without engaging with it. Repetition has its place when done sensitively. This song is about making Jesus central. It’s about giving him the primary place in our hearts. As we sing this with a determination to get right with God, the Spirit of Christ will fill our hearts and make the words a reality.

Jesus, be the centre
Be my source, be my light
JesusJesus, be the centre
Be my hope, be my song

Be the fire in my heart
Be the wind in these sails
Be the reason that I live
Jesus, Jesus

Jesus, be my vision
Be my path, be my guide
